ISIC
Written by: Tara Schauerte

Traveling on a student budget can be difficult, but the International Student Travel Confederation (ISTC) is on a mission to make it easier and more affordable. Each year they issue over 4.5 million International Student Identity Cards (ISIC) that give students internationally recognized identification to prove their student status and special discounts and services in over 100 countries.

Endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the ISIC offers thousands of discounts to cardholders from airlines, railways, bus and shipping lines, local retailers, historic and cultural institutions and accommodation providers.

In addition to travel and accommodation discounts, the ISIC gives you access to the network of over 5,000 student travel organizations around the world for information on local ISIC benefits and services plus assistance if you have any problems while traveling. There is also a multilingual 24-hour ISIC Emergency Help Line that can offer medical, legal, student travel office referrals and emergency message handling to reach family or friends back home.

When purchased in the United States, ISIC provides cardholders with basic accident and sickness insurance for out-of-country travel. Some of the things coverage includes are hospital stays, accident medical expenses, emergency evacuation, passport protection and baggage delay insurance.

As a final added bonus, ISIC also provides a service called ISIConnect that offers:
  • discount rates on international long distance

  • voicemail for your family and friends to contact you while you travel

  • e-mail service that notifies you by telephone that you have mail before you go searching for a cyber café

  • online fax service

  • encrypted online storage of your important documentation (credit cards, passport, traveler's checks) in case of an emergency.

  • To get an ISIC, you must be a resident of the United States, at least 12 years old and enrolled full-time at your institution. You will need to provide proof of your full-time enrolment such as a photocopy of your student ID card, a letter from your school registrar bearing the seal of the institution and confirming full-time student status or a signed and sealed School Declaration and a photocopy of other picture ID. You will also need to provide a passport-sized photo of yourself to go on the front of the card.

An ISIC currently costs $22 US and is available either online or at your local branch of STA Travel (www.statravel.com) or Travel Cuts (www.travelcuts.com). Each card is valid from September to December of the following year (16 months).

For more information about ISIC contact your local issuing office or visit the ISTC website at www.istc.org.

    Not a Full-Time Student?
Part-time students and other youth under 25 years old are still eligible for many of the ISIC discounts with another ISTC card called the International Youth Travel Card (IYTC). This card also only costs $22 US and is available everywhere ISIC is sold.
